Best destinations for Deshaun
By: Jake Rajala
It’s safe to that Deshaun Watson is finished as a Cleveland Brown. I still expect that the 29 year old will get another shot in the league. After all, he was once an MVP-caliber QB. Even after Carson Wentz struggled to regain form after tearing his Achilles, there were teams interested in acquiring him. With that said, I’m going to untwine five destinations for Watson.
New York Jets
Deshaun Watson and Justin Fields have similar skill sets. Fields is coming off a stronger season than Watson – as Fields had a 3-1 record and threw five touchdowns to one interception. Watson could finally benefit from some QB friendly competition, too. The Jets rank 20th in cap space, so it would be a bit of a challenge to spend money elsewhere, if they reel in Watson.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Even if the Pittsburgh Steelers acquire A-Rod, they need a long-term answer at QB. Mason Rudolph is one of the worst starting QBs in the league right now. Watson can be in an offense that has prolific weapons, particularly ones that can excel deep down the field. Watson can really push the ball 40-50 yards deep on the run.
New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints heavily pursued Watson a few years back. They may feel like they have a better situation for Watson to succeed than the scheme he was at in Cleveland. The Saints could make a trade involving Derek Carr for Watson. Plus, the Saints could still draft a QB early.
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys didn’t witness future Hall of Fame ability from Dak Prescott last season. Combine that with Jerry Jones’s impeccable knack to make big trades, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he wanted Watson to compete with Dak. Jones recently signed Trey Lance, who has high potential. Although, Lance left to join LAC.
Carolina Panthers
Bryce Young bounced back last season, but it’s not quite clear if he’s legit. He still registered an 4-8 record. I’d like to see him take the next step, after improving in each of his last two seasons, and be a Pro Bowler. The Panthers rank 25th in cap space, so it would be quite the gamble.
