When Will Matthew Stafford Retire?
By: Jake Rajala
Matthew Stafford has been one of the most intriguing quarterbacks in the NFL over the past decade. He was a once first overall pick putting up godly stats with Calvin Johnson. Then he switched squads (and weather) by going from Detroit to the Los Angeles Rams.
In his first season as a Ram, he had one of the most gunslinger-like seasons in 2021, where he threw for 41 touchdowns and 17 interceptions! In the same season, he led the Rams to an 12-5 record and a Super Bowl victory!
Stafford is still human, which means he can’t play forever. At age 37, it would be hard to imagine than he plays beyond five more seasons. According to Pro Football Talk, McVay hopes he has Stafford for a “couple of more seasons”.
Joe Flacco has similar traits as Stafford and Flacco refuses to lay down at age 40. Flacco and Stafford and sling it quite well if they get proper protection. It should be noted that the Rams ranked 10th in sacks allowed last season.
It would be quite silly for the Rams to ship away Stafford right now. After all, they went out to get the 32 year old Davante Adams to pair with Puka Nacua, which makes the two WRs one of the best duos in the league.
I would like to see the Rams target a Top-3 QB in the draft next season. There have been QBs like Jaxson Dart and Will Levis, who slip out of the Top-20. Perhaps they can be successful in the post-season and still land a QB with impressive potential.
The NFC West has “gifted, young” QBs. Each of the teams besides the Rams has a starting QB 27 or younger. Hence, it’s vital that the Rams find their future QB soon.
