Is Mathieu a Hall of Famer?
By: Jake Rajala
Tyrann Mathieu, also known as the Honey Badger, has officially hung up his cleats. So, the pivotal question is: is Mathieu Hall of Fame bound?
Tyrann has 36 ints, 100 pass deflections, and 838 tackles in his career. He has been to the Pro Bowl three times and he’s been All-Pro three times.
Ed Reed was a recent inductee to the NFL Hall of Fame.
Well, Mathieu doesn’t compare that well to Reed. The former Ravens safety has been to nine Pro Bowls and five-time first-team All-Pro. To be somewhat fair, I will unveil how another recent safety has done. This would be none other than Brian Dawkins. He made nine Pro Bowls, four first-team All-Pro teams, and earned himself a nickname: Weapon X.
I would say he has had similar success as Kam Chancellor. They both have had 3-4 Pro Bowl selections. They were elite, but they didn’t mop the floor against their foes.
Clearly, the Honey Badger doesn’t stack up well to Hall of Fame safeties. Yes, he was one of the best LSU Tigers to ever touch the field. That doesn’t earn him a gold jacket, however.
To be fair, he does have a Super Bowl ring, which can’t be said by countless Hall of Famers.
Mathieu deserves to be in the Hall of really good. He was an elite figure and he will go down as one of the Chiefs best safeties of all time. This doesn’t earn him a spot in Canton.
I would have loved to see Mathieu be named first-team All-Pro two more times at least. He didn’t transition to an All-Pro figure with the Saints. He stayed healthy for the most part in his career, but it wasn’t enough.
