CJ Stroud vs Deshaun Watson
By: Jake Rajala
CJ Stroud has been a bit up and down heading into his third season. He wants to be the next quality quarterback that the Houston Texans have had. The last superb QB on the Texans was none other than Deshaun Watson.
Stroud has unleashed 43 touchdowns in two seasons. He also has a record of 19-13 over his first two seasons. To be fair, I have to include how he is doing over the past couple of games. Well, he’s 0-2 and the Texans have the NFL’s worst offense.
PFF has Stroud dubbed with a grade of 63.5 this season, which is far from sexy.
There is plenty of time for the Texans to turn things around. After all, they play in an average AFC South division.
Stroud is the best thing since Watson. Watson, who is a failed experiment with the Browns, made three Pro Bowls in his first four seasons with the Texans. He led the league in passing yards in 2020 with 4,823 passing yards. He also threw 26 TDs twice and 33 TDs once. Furthermore, he went 11-5 and 10-5 in two of his four seasons.
Ultimately, Watson has been a much better QB. Stroud has failed to unleash more than 23 TDs in a single season. Sure, Watson has struggled with CLE. Well, Stroud is failing to take the next step and pass Watson in 2015 thus far.
I don’t have a lot of faith in Stroud. Just as he’s failed to light up the sky, he hasn’t been overly clutch. I also don’t like how the Texans are failing to support Stroud with less than adequate weapons.
With that said, I expect Stroud to play a few more seasons in Houston. He has a chance to make magic happen and surpass the resume of Watson. I will say his schedule is pedestrian, as it was ranked 18th by Fox Sports heading into the season.
