Best landing spots for Carson Wentz
By: Jake Rajala
The former NDSU quarterback, Carson Wentz, is making the most of his opportunity with J.J. McCarthy sidelined. Wentz is well-regarded as one of the top backup quarterbacks in the league.
Over the past few weeks, Wentz has unleashed five touchdowns to two ints. He’s shown that he’s not “washed up” or “burnt out”. With that said, I still fully expect McCarthy to have the keys to the team when he returns. Well, I believe Wentz will join an average team where he can start. He could also join a very talented team and be a backup.
With that said, I’m going to lay out several top landing spots for Wentz.
Cleveland Browns
Wentz won’t automatically get the Cleveland Browns QB1 gig, but he will have a real shot at it. He does have more wisdom than Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders combined. Kevin Stefanski also likes having a big arm QB, as he’s coached Baker Mayfield for a couple of seasons. I could see the Browns trading one of their young QBs, too.
Houston Texans
After CJ Stroud’s rookie season, Stroud has fallen off a cliff. They need more insurance at QB. Stroud had 4 TDs against the Ravens last Sunday, but the Ravens handed the Texans too many opportunities, as Lamar Jackson wasn’t playing. To be fair, the Texans also need to give more help to whoever is starting at QB.
New Orleans Saints
I love the direction that Spencer Rattler is going in his second season. However, I believe they could benefit from a veteran in the QB room. Tyler Shough is a rookie right now. Wentz and Shough also have a very similar skillet. They both have a big arm and sneaky speed.
San Francisco 49ers
I really believe former Pats QB Mac Jones will join a team where he could have “a legit chance of starting”. Brock Purdy is the true franchise QB in SF. Wentz could still be a backup in SF and learn under one of the best offensive minds for a year or two. Plus, Purdy has missed crucial games in his 49ers career, so it would be wise to have a talented backup.
Tennessee Titans
Cam Ward just picked up his first NFL win, which is thrilling. Ward has a high ceiling, but he hasn’t lived up to expectations thus far. He only had 2 TDs to 3 ints. Yikes. Wentz could come in and start for a couple of years until Ward is ready mentally to have the keys.
Las Vegas Raiders
The battle of the veteran QBs. Wentz vs Geno Smith would be a fascinating situation. Each QB has created tools over the years to be a sharp QB. Smith hasn’t turned out to be a Top-15 QB in Vegas thus far. He has six TDs to 9 ints. It would be an understatement to say they will be shopping for a gifted, NFL-ready QB in 2026. They could have Wentz has a bridge QB.
Philadelphia Eagles
Philly has many special memories of Wentz. He has played like an MVP candidate at times. Tanner McKee isn’t a quality QB2, to be fair. Wentz could boost the QB2 spot. Wentz wouldn’t be pushing Jalen Hurts for the starting spot, but he has a lot of grit and could learn new tricks.
