Is it wise to sell Justin Fields?

By: Jake Rajala

The dual-threat Justin Fields quarterback for the New York Jets has been shunned as of late. His owner, Woody Johnson, threw him under the bus. Some may say it worked as he led his squad to win their first game of the season by a score of 39-38.

Fields isn’t a terrible fantasy QB. He has thrown for 20+ points in four games. It’s even impressive that he won, given that he doesn’t have a lot of firepower. Besides the young Ohio State stud, Garrett Wilson, the talent is quite dim.

So, a fascinating question clouds over Fields: should he be sold?

I don’t believe it’s time to sell Fields. I believe he’s one of the best holds at the QB spot. He is still quite young, so it would be okay if he gets benched. We’ve seen the likes of Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold bounce back after struggling for many seasons in their career.

So, would there be a price to let go of Fields? Well, there certainly is. I would sell him for a modest QB and a second round pick. I don’t see a team making a push for him at that price. Hence, he mine as well be held right now.

Fields was benched last season in favor of Russell Wilson. It won’t be the first time that Fields has faced serious adversity. If Fields can play at a decent level, I can’t imagine him losing his job to Tyrod Taylor, who isn’t a Top-20 QB. Fields has more upside than Taylor, so it’s worth going through the growing pains with Fields and trying to see if he could be the long-term QB. After all, they will likely go through bumps in the road if they insert a 2026 rookie QB in their offense.
