Who will get the first overall pick?
By: Jake Rajala
There may be a lot of teams pushing to acquire the first overall pick. It’s especially attractive with an elite quarterback prospct in Fernando Mendoza on the table. With that said, I’m going to unfold several teams that could trade for the first overall pick.
Minnesota Vikings
The J.J. McCarthy experiment cost the General Manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, his job. If the former Michigan QB sticks around, he may cost Kevin O’Connell his gig, too. I’d love to see the Vikings push for Fernando. They could offer Justin Jefferson. The Raiders need a WR, too.
Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins axed Mike McDaniel, and I suspect that Tua Tagovailoa will follow him out the door. After all, he threw 15 interceptions last season. The Dolphins don’t have a lot to offer on their roster, so I’d believe they would put a lot of draft picks on the table for Fernando.
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals have a young, gifted QB in Kyler Murray to give to the Raiders. The Cardinals could include their first round pick, too. The Cardinals can still fall back on Jacoby Brissett (who was my fantasy QB) to be a bridge QB. Brissett will only improve with more chemistry, too.
Indianapolis Colts
If the Colts can’t break the bank for Danny Dimes, they may want to draft a QB on Day 1. Even if Jones returns to the GMEN, they could offer him to the Raiders. They can’t try to bring 40+ year old QBs back from the dead forever. The Colts could also tempt the Raiders with Michael Pittman Jr.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers need a young QB. If Rodgers returns, it will certainly be his last season. Mike McCarthy has always had QBs in their prime, such as Rodgers in Green Bay, and Dak Prescott in Dallas. I’d love to see him have another superb “long term” QB . The Steelers have many pieces on defense to offer the Raiders, such as T.J. Watt or Jalen Ramsey.
Cleveland Browns
I’m not sold on Shedeur Sanders, despite him making the Pro Bowl. He threw more interceptions (10) than passing touchdowns (7). He also went 3-4. I believe he was the third best rookie QB, after Tyler Shough and Jaxson Dart. Sanders didn’t quite look like he deserved to be a Day 1 draft pick, in my opinion.
Los Angeles Rams
The LA Rams are the ultimate wildcard to land the first overall pick. Matthew Stafford will likely retire soon. They need someone to feed Puka Nacua and Davante Adams the ball. They also have a Top-10 defense. Sean McVay will have to get creative to land the first overall pick, but anything is possible!
