Detroit Lions to-do list this offseason

Lions to-do list in 2026

By: Jake Rajala

The Detroit Lions have many difficult decisions this offseason. They play in the most competitive NFL division (as every team had a winning record in the NFC North). Everyone expected them to be Super Bowl contenders and they didn’t even make the playoffs. Well, I’m going to help break it down and lay out a to-do list of what needs to be accomplished. Hopefully, they can return to the playoff gauntlet if they follow these steps below.

5. Bring back Alex Anzalone

Alex Anzalone is a free agent in 2026. He is quite a versatile LB. Anzalone recorded 95 tackles, 2.5 sacks, four TFLs, and nine pass deflections. He had a PFF grade of 67.5, which is middle of the pack. He is 31 years old, so he’s in his prime. If he doesn’t return to DET, I’d love to see him reunite with the New Orleans Saints.

4. Sign an interior DL

The Lions have to get back to the days when their IDL (such as Suh and Fairly) dominated upfront. I’d like to see them let D.J. Reader leave and replace him with a new DT stud. If they get a new, excellent DT, it will make the lives of the LBs like Anzalone much easier. A well-rounded DT can also do stunts to help Hutch hunt down QBs, as well.

3. Keep David Montgomery

The Lions need their two headed monster at RB. Jahmyr Gibbs can stay fresh and be a home run threat with help from David Montgomery. David unleashed 716 rushing yards, eight rushing TDs, and averaged 4.5 YPC with the Lions last season. He had an admirable PFF grade of 75.3 last season. This tandem reminds me of Alivin Kamara and Mark Ingram.

2. Keep Sam LaPorta

There have been many trade rumors surrounding the Lions tight end Sam LaPorta. I say that they need to keep him and extend him, as he’s in the final season of his contract. The defending Super Bowl Champions (Seattle Seahawks) were second in PPG last season, and the Los Angeles Rams were first in PPG. The Lions need to be able to go blow for blow with the top two NFC teams.

1. Find an LT

Taylor Decker plans to return for another season, at 32 years old. Dan Campbell said they need to improve the position even if he stays. I would expect some friendly competition for Decker this offseason. I’d like to see the Lions draft a OT in round one. They are fine with their weapons on offense and I expect them to sign or trade for an edge rusher.
