What to watch in Week 1 of preseason
By: Jake Rajala
Week 1 of preseason has a lot of quality action. Without further ado, I’m going to unfold several things to watch in Week 1 of preseason.
J.J. McCarthy
The story of the past week has to be Kyler Murray winning the QB1 job in Minnesota. Murray has a lot of dual threat talent. With that said, the spotlight is on J.J. McCarthy. If he can perform well, he may earn himself a ticket to a team where he could start.
Fernando Mendoza
It’s been widely reported that 2026 first overall pick Fernando Mendoza will get plenty of action this weekend. Everybody is anxious to see the QB with very high expectations play. If he can have a fast start, he could have a leg up on the QB battle (where Kirk Cousins is the other QB).
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough went 5-4 last season. He needs to prove he took the next step. He worked out with Drew Brees this offseason. He also got some help with Jordyn Tyson and Travis Etienne. I fully expect him to hit the ground running and shine for a series or two.
Tua Tagovailoa
Tua Tagovailoa could win Comeback Player of the Year this season. Tua has Kyle Pitts and Drake London at his disposal. He is a QB that has led the league in passing yards and completion percentage before. He isn’t a complete slouch.
Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson has been one of the biggest busts in recent memory. He needs to prove he isn’t a dud and that he can shine right now. He did go 5-1 in 2023, so he has success written all over him. Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders will aim to take the QB1 job away from him.
Honorable Mention:
Anthony Richardson
The former first round pick Anthony Richardson will start in Week 1 of preseason. The well-paid Daniel Jones won’t play at all during preseason. This really opens up the door for Anthony to shine and make a case to be a starter in this league.
