5 things we learned from the Giants-Saints showdown

Reflecting on the Giants-Saints contest

By: Jake Rajala

The New Orleans Saints-New York Giants game was the tightest game on the weekend thus far. The Saints were up 34-10 and the Giants scored 17 points late in the game to bring it to 34-27. It was 4th and 1 in the red-zone and the Giants failed to convert. With that said, I’m going to unfold five things we learned from the Giants-Saints game.

The Saints QB

The second year QB Tyler Shough played his heart out. He had four total touchdowns. He has poise and accuracy. Furthermore, he can make plays with his legs when defenses aren’t expecting it. I would have liked to see him make more plays in the fourth quarter. To be fair, Kellen Moore was a bit too conservative.

Martin Emerson Jr.

If Martin Emerson Jr. had better hands, he would have had three interceptions. All jokes aside, it was quite impressive to see him record a pair of interceptions. He is looking like he is superior to Kool-Aid McKinstry. He is finally showing his worth as a third round pick.

Malik Nabers

Malik Nabers looked like Jerry Rice today. He had 12 grabs for 165 yards. J.J. McCarthy had a beautiful deep throw to Nabers in the final minutes of the game. Nabers is looking like everything the Giants wanted with Kadarius Toney. I would have liked to see him get more attention on the final 3rd and 4th down.

Welcome back Alvin Kamara

Alvin Kamara had a highlight catch and run for a touchdown. He broke a tackle, then managed to stay in bounds, then dazzle in open field to score. He had 7 carries for 34 yards, which is modest for a RB2. Kendre Miller had the bulk of the carries (20). Kamara is a little banged up, so that’s why he didn’t get 20+ carries.

J.J. McCarthy

Everybody expected J.J. McCarthy to struggle and throw short passes when he entered the game. That was not the case. He did throw an interception, but he never looked back after. He had 243 passing yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. If J.J. continues to play like this, they will have to make a difficult choice between him and Jaxson Dart.

It’s always a shoot-out between the Saints and Giants. It doesn’t matter if Drew Brees or Tyler Shough is the QB. I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing these two squads duking it out in a prime-time game next season.
