Steelers x-factors against Baltimore
By: Jake Rajala
The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off a disappointing loss against the Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 19-17. Nonetheless, the Steelers have already punched their ticket to the post-season. With that said, I’m going to untwine a few x-factors for the Steelers heading into their battle against the Baltimore Ravens.
Preston Smith
The former Green Bay Packers edge rusher isn’t completely washed up. Smith notched a sack against Cincy last week. T.J. Watt will certainly garner double and triple teams, so that should open up opportunities for other pass rushers to shine. Smith will also face Lamar on the edge and Smith has the athletic ability to stuff Lamar once or twice.
Van Jefferson
George Pickens fell off a cliff and it’s not clear if he will return to Pro Bowl form. Pickens may not only be less than 100%, but he should still garner double coverage often from Baltimore. That combination of effects should lead to Van Jefferson getting opportunities to shine. Jefferson has impressive deep-speed and Russell Wilson has an impressive deep throw. Hopefully, they can connect on a few chunks of yards this weekend.
Cordarrelle Patterson
Cordarrelle Patterson can excel from any spot on the field. He can take it all the way from RB, WR, or on a kick return. Arthur Smith needs to get creative, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Patterson get the ball in space from a triple reverse or on a couple of WR screens. Patterson holds a similar skillset as Taysom Hill.
Honorable Mention:
Justin Fields
Obviously, the Steelers don’t want to see Russell Wilson get benched. However, the Steelers could be in a scenario where they sit 6-7 or 3-6 at half-time and need a spark to ignite the offense. Fields is more of a threat to make plays with his legs. Wilson has already hit a wall a few times as of late, so it wouldn’t be a complete if Fields gets the keys in a cold, physical AFC North showdown.
