Is Sean McVay overrated?

Is McVay overrated right now?

By: Jake Rajala

Let’s set this straight: Sean McVay is a tireless worker and one of the most creative head coaches in the league. In his very first NFL season, his offense ranked first in points scored! In his second season, his squad ranked second in points scored! It’s safe to say that he showed that youth wasn’t a big deal in the coaching ranks.

The biggest moment for McVay wasn’t his regular season success. In 2021 – he won the big dance, also known as the Super Bowl. The Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl.

Since the SB, the Rams have struggled to regain their magic. This doesn’t entirely reflect of McVay’s genius. In 2022, they ranked 32nd in points scored! Their offense was like death valley. With that said, it’s worth noting that Matthew Stafford played in only nine of those games!

Well, what about last season? Surely, McVay deserves the heat for having a medicore offense over the past few months. Well, not exactly. Cooper Kupp missed five games, Puka Nacua missed six games, and even Stafford missed a game. When McVay’s toys returned to his arsenal, the Rams were one of the best teams in the league. They even beat the Buffalo Bills!

The Rams throttled the Minnesota Vikings in their first playoff battle this season by a score of 27-9. McVay proved to be too much for Kevin O’Connell.

McVay hasn’t only showcased an elite team over the back-end of the season, but he has pieces in place to help him compete for a long time. Puka is only 23 years old and Kyren Williams is only 24 years old! Stafford will likely play 2-3 more seasons, so I expect McVay to groom his replacement soon.

Not only has McVay found room to dominate, but he’s discovered magic in the NFL’s most brutal division: the NFC West. McVay deserves a heap of praise for duking it out against elite faces and teams, in particular Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers. It’s hard for the Rams (or 49ers) to finished with the 1st seed in the NFC, as it’s very hard to sweep their division foes.

McVay displayed tears after their last playoff exit. The tears from McVay show how passionate he his about the game of football. Coaches that show a plethora of passion make anybody want to follow them into battle.
