Overrated first round picks
By: Jake Rajala
The NFL Draft was full of surprises. There were a few surprises that weren’t exactly positive and deserved to be called head scratching first round picks. With that said, I’m going to untwine a few head scratching picks.
Travis Hunter
I have made it clear: I don’t love the Jaguars mega-trade to move up to take a non-QB. Travis Hunter could be a Pro Bowler, but I don’t think he’s a decade-like talent. I expect him to get more playing time at CB than WR. At CB, he is closer to a Marshon Lattimore potential than a Darelle Revis-like caliber. With that said, I would like to see him play CB and then come in for the red zone on offense.
Emeka Egbuka
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have Mike Evans and Chris Godwin at the WR position. I don’t love their pick of Emeka Egbuka. I would have rather seen them select Malaki Starks, who is the top safety in the draft. If they did really want a WR, I’d rather see them select Matthew Golden, who can be a quality deep-threat – which is something they don’t have.
Omarion Hampton
I love the talent of Omarion Hampton and he could certainly be a 1k yard RB. However, I don’t believe he’s worth a first round pick. Lance Zeirlein of NFL.com nicely compared him to Rhamondre Stevenson. Rhamondre ran for 801 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He did manage to run for 1,040 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore. Omarion will also be an 800-1k yard ball-carrier. The Chargers also brought in Najee Harris, who will be the starter at RB.
Honorable Mention:
Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston could be a starting CB, but I wish the Bills drafted a WR here. The Bills front office seems to believe that since Tom Brady managed to win Super Bowl trophies without a quality WR room, they can get away with an average WR room. I believe that it hogwash. For 1. Tom Brady is the GOAT. For 2. the Pats had a defense that kept the Rams to three points and made impressive stops against the Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons.
