Bills WR room outlook
By: Jake Rajala
The Buffalo Bills don’t have the sexiest wide receiver room. Interestingly, the Buffalo Bills believe that they don’t need a gifted WR room, as they said that the Pats won a Super Bowl ring without talented WRs. I believe that’s a terrible attitude. We have to remember that the Pats QB, where they have little WR talent, was Tom Brady.
However, they have some youth and potential. Khalil Shakir is the alpha of the group. He hauled in 821 yards, four touchdowns, and averaged 10.8 YPC. PFF handed him a grade of 76.8 – which was 28th out of 98. I don’t love that he’s their WR1. He’s more of a WR2 on a different, quality team.
Keon Coleman and Joshua Palmer are their WR2 and WR3. Coleman can make contested catches with his size (6’3, 220). I don’t love Palmer as a WR3, as I would rather see them insert a more quality slot weapon at WR3.
They added Elijah Moore, who is had 538 yards a season ago. He will compete for the WR3 spot. I have to imagine that the door is still open for a top-notch free agent WR to join the team. After all, they don’t even have a Top-20 WR room in my opinion. That’s a generous statement.
Amari Cooper is still a talented WR, who isn’t overly old. Cooper had a career-high 1,250 yards in 2023. The factor going against them is that they are 31st in cap space.
It would have made a lot of sense for Buffalo to add a WR in the draft before the 7th round. They could have traded up for one of the few WRs taken ahead of them in the first or second round.
I really dislike their philosophy with their WR room. Brady (and Aaron Rodgers) can play with modest weapons, but Josh Allen isn’t the same passing caliber QB as those two. It will be a wake-up call for the Bills WR room when they struggle to get open and the likes of the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins. Allen can make magic happen with his legs, but that won’t be enough to upend elite NFL teams.
