3 biggest obstacles for the Texans in 2025

Obstacles for the Texans

By: Jake Rajala

The Houston Texans won their division (AFC South) last season. It’s safe to say that their division was weak, as there was a four win team and a 3 win team in it! I don’t believe it will be that easy moving forward. With that said, I’m going to untwine the three biggest obstacles for the Texans.

  • Cam Ward

Cam Ward has RG3 and Cam Newton ability. This means he will shine on Day 1. He had the best overall score (of a 86) from NFL.com on QB profiles. Big Ben has been a common comparison to Ward. However, Ward is a bit smaller (as he’s 6’2). Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, and Tyler Shough all have similar arm talent. The difference is that Ward can see the field quite well.

  • Pass protection

Simple enough. The Houston Texans were putrid at protecting the QB last season. They ranked 30th in sacks allowed. The Texans have to play the Denver Broncos this season, who had the most sacks last season. They also have to play the Ravens (second in sacks). Plus, they have to face Travon Walker twice a season.

  • Weapons

The Texans simply don’t have a lot of firepower. They didn’t properly replace Stefon Diggs. Nico Collins is a modest pass catcher (1,006 yards). I don’t love that Christian Kirk is a starter. He flared out of Jacksonville. The Texans aren’t doing enough with their weapons to help a young QB like CJ Stroud. I’d love to see them ink Amari Cooper, who could be a fine WR2.

The Texans aren’t in panic mode quite yet. They have a potential All-Pro at QB and a couple of potential All-Pros at DE. I’d still like to see more depth pieces, particularly at WR. If they want to make it far in the playoffs, they need back-ups that can replace starters and make magic happen.
