3 underrated candidates to break the sack record

Who will break the sack record?

By: Jake Rajala

The NFL sack record hasn’t been eclipsed since Michael Strahan sacked Brett Favre to set the record. Of course, T.J. Watt tied the record. With that said, it’s obvious that Watt, Myles Garrett, and Trey Hendrickson are the leading candidates to break the record. Well, I’m going to untwine which underdogs could break the record!

Dante Fowler Jr.

Micah Parsons will draw countless double teams. Parsons reeled in 12 sacks in 13 games last season. Fowler Jr. can benefit from this. Fowler Jr. managed to record 10.5 sacks last season. Fowler Jr. will also shine due to his competition being lackluster. Washington was 20th in sacks allowed, Philadelphia was 21st in sacks allowed, and the Giants were 22nd in sacks allowed last season.

Andrew Van Ginkel

Andrew Van Ginkel is simply a stud. He came out of nowhere to be a sack master. Andrew had 11.5 sacks last season – which helped him earn second team All-Pro honors. Lucky for Andrew, his divisional foe in the Chicago Bears allowed the most sacks in the league last season. Andrew will also have a massive chip on his shoulder after signing a one year prove it deal. He will turn 30 in July. Hence, he needs to lay it all on the field in 2025.

Will Anderson Jr.

Will Anderson is still entering his prime. Similar to Fowler Jr, Anderson is taking advantage of a teammate dominating. Anderson’s teammate who is dominating is none other than Danielle Hunter. Hunter had 12 sacks last season. Meanwhile, Anderson had 11 sacks! Anderson also missed three games! It will be slightly more challenging for Anderson Jr. to dominate in his division – as the Jags and Colts are tied for sixth in sacks allowed.

Honorable Mention:

Travon Walker

Travon Walker has the potential and he’s learning how to use pass rushing moves. He had 10 sacks in 2023 and 10.5 sacks last season. It’s impressive that Walker has gotten home to the QB so many times, despite his pass defense giving up more yards than any other secondary. Thankfully, the Jags signed a pair of defensive backs (Jourdan Lewis and Eric Murray) to improve their pass defense. Of course, Walker needs to keep pace with his draft day pal, Aidan Hutchinson.
