Will the Saints bring back Jameis Winston?
By: Jake Rajala
The New Orleans Saints have a risky quarterback situation. They are putting their faith in a rookie, who is their 2025 second round pick, Tyler Shough. The other option is a second-year QB in Spencer Rattler, who was their fifth round pick in the 2024 draft. Hence, it may make a lot of sense to bring in a veteran. An obvious veteran who could help the Saints and bring back smiles to the building is Jameis Winston. Matter of fact, Cameron Jordan has pointed out that he wants Jaboo back.
Winston played his best football in 2021, under a genius play-caller in Sean Payton. He led the Saints to a 5-2 record and threw 14 TDs to 3 ints. He showed off arm strength that wasn’t visible with Drew Brees. In the very first regular season game of the 2021 season, he unleashed a 55 yard TD pass to Deonte Harris. Sadly, his former team tore Winston’s ACL.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Saints are in desperate need of a new QB. Tyler Shough has had three season-ending injuries! Yes, you read that correctly. As for Rattler, he went 0-9 last season. If he starts 0-3 with an opportunity, this would absolutely call for a new QB to start.
Winston is the best combination of talent and price. He has more talent than the free agent QBs. Furthermore, he wouldn’t be that expensive to acquire in a trade. We’ve seen QBs turn around their careers late in their journey. Geno Smith won Comeback Player of The Year not too long ago.
I would like to see Winston stick with one team if possible. He is slowly turning into a Ryan Fitzpatrick 2.0, where he can put up flashes, but fail to lead a team to the post-season. He also can’t get an advantage of learning the playbook if he switches squads all the time.
The signing of Winston doesn’t mean that he will for sure win the QB battle. Shough and Rattler have made electric plays this summer so far. It’s been reported that Rattler has impressive command of the offense, as it’s his second straight season here.
