Floor and ceiling for Geno Smith

Outlook for Geno Smith

By: Jake Rajala

Geno Smith was a late bloomer in his career. He seemed to be a bust after struggling to shine as a second round pick from the New York Jets. He was the laughing stock of New York Jets football. In 2022, he really came onto the scene. He led the league with a 69.8 completion percentage. In the same year, he threw 30 TDs to 11 ints. With that said, should we expect that to be his ceiling? He can make magic happen and be clutch on occasion, but I believe that will be his ceiling at 34 years old.

Smith never returned to be a Pro Bowl caliber QB. Last season, he threw 21 touchdowns, but he also threw 16 ints! Hence, he’s been all over the map.

In a Raiders uniform, he should hook up with Brock Bowers a lot. Bowers recorded 112 catches, 1,194 yards, and five TDs. He also has a potential superstar at RB with Ashton Jeanty. Smith should have a stellar play-action game.

I foresee a ceiling for Smith of 27 touchdowns and 4,200 passing yards.

The Raiders don’t have much ammunition at WR, however. Jakobi Meyers is a stellar WR1. However, I believe they need upgrades at WR2 and WR3. I’d love to see the Raiders sign Keenan Allen or Amari Cooper.

The Raiders need to work on their pass protection. They ranked 24th in sacks allowed last season. Smith is a pocket passer. He needs his time and space to step up in the pocket and unleash a dart.

I do like LT Kolton Miller a lot. PFF gave him a grade of 80.6. He is vital, as they play frightening pass rushers like Khalil Mack, Chris Jones, and Nik Bonitto.

I believe Smith has a floor of 16 touchdowns and 3,500 passing yards.

Smith has a lot of potential, even if he’s been on a bit of a roller coaster. Tom Brady wanted Smith over Sam Darnold. Geno must be showing something if the GOAT likes him. I’m excited to see Geno square up against the best of the best, the Kansas City Chiefs.
