Steelers-Dolphins trade
By: Jake Rajala
Unless you live under a rock, you would have seen that the Miami Dolphins traded Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers, in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and tight end Jonnu Smith. With that said, I’m going to unfold my grades for each AFC squad.
Pittsburgh Steelers: B
I love the aggression and passion to win “right now” by acquiring an old CB. They will have Ramsey, Darius Slay, (hopefully) T.J. Watt, and Cameron Heyward on defense. Fitzpatrick can do an average job in zone coverage. Furthermore, he only has one interception in his past two seasons combined. My biggest critique is that I’d like to see them go with acquiring a different CB, such as Trevon Diggs. I would have loved to see the Steelers get a younger CB. I also don’t love that they gave up Jonnu Smith, who was a modest starter.
Miami Dolphins: C
The Dolphins coughed up an elite CB in Ramsey to acquire an average safety. Minkah is also just a couple of years younger than Ramsey. With Minkah’s past two seasons in the books, many people believe his best years are behind him. PFF gave him a grade of 68.4 last season. If the Phins can get CB Stephon Gilmore or would have gotten Jaire Alexander, I would say it’s genius.
I don’t believe that this trade is overly intense, as each player is around 30 years old. There also wasn’t any first round pick included in the draft, or a team that sold all their picks (hello, Mike Ditka). Of course, people enjoy to see QBs and RBs in the news more than CBs and safeties, too. I believe that each team is pushing to be successful in 2025. Mike McDaniel wants to keep his job and Mike Tomlin wants to win another Super Bowl. With that said, I’m fascinated to see how these players fit and shine with their new team.
