Why Joe Burrow won’t win MVP

Joe Burrow won’t win the MVP soon

By: Jake Rajala

Joe Burrow led the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns last season. Yet, he wasn’t given the MVP or OPOY trophy! It’s very similar to Drew Brees throwing over 5k yards and failing to win the MVP once. With that said, I believe that Burrow will not win the MVP next year.

Burrow’s defense left Burrow out to dry. They ranked 25th in PPG. They had Trey Hendrickson, who notched a league high 17.5 sacks. Still, their defense ranked 24th in sacks! Burrow gets into constant shoot-outs with his putrid defense, as if he’s still in college. To make matters worse, Hendrickson hasn’t shown up for practice.

Dual threat QBs tend to get honors because they have a very high number of total yards and overall touchdowns. Burrow may have had 4,918 passing yards last season, but Lamar had 4,971 yards between passing and rushing. Burrow recorded 43 touchdowns, but Jackson had 45 combined touchdowns. The reigning MVP, Josh Allen had 40 combined touchdowns. However, he did find a way to win!

The most important part of having a strong MVP case is winning.

Allen had a record of 13-4. He beat teams like Detroit and Kansas City in the regular season. Aaron Rodgers didn’t throw over 5k yards, but he did have a 13-3 record in back to back seasons in 2020 and 2021, which led him to win MVP in each back-to-back season.

It won’t be easy for Burrow to even stand out in his division. The Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers have loaded rosters. Each team made the playoffs ahead of Cincy last season. The Steelers new QB in 2025 by the name of Aaron Rodgers is also an upgrade over their 2024 QB, Russell Wilson.

Burrow placed fourth in MVP voting last season. It will be hard to count on Patrick Mahomes placing sixth in MVP voting again. So, he doesn’t only have to worry about consistent, elite QBs in Allen and Jackson, but he will likely have to pursue the trophy with Mahomes not having an off-year. Christian McCaffrey, who only played in four games last season, will also be healthy and aiming for another MVP like campaign. He placed third in 2023 MVP votes.

Burrow is still 28 years old, which is young in QB years. It will be hard winning MVP against the other young, prolific QBs with his roster. However, he should be able to win OPOY more often when Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, and Derrick Henry are around 33 years old.
