3 bold predictions for Saints training camp
By: Jake Rajala
Training Camp is nearly upon us. The team that fascinates me the most is the New Orleans Saints. They have a quarterback competition, many rookies vying for a starting role, and they are my favorite team. With that said, I’m going to unfold three bold predictions for the Saints in training camp.
Spencer Rattler wins the starting gig
All eyes have been on Tyler Shough. He’s a second round pick, so he was drafted with a lot of expectations and he was hand picked by Kellen Moore. I still believe that Spencer Rattler’s clock is a bit faster than Shough. Rattler also has better arm strength than Shough, which should help for his two WRs that can run 4.3 40 yard dashes. Rattler and Shough can both make plays with their legs.
Cameron Jordan is a back-up
Cameron Jordan is arguably the most popular Saints player. After all, he was given his own day in New Orleans! on May 8th, it’s called “Cameron Jordan Day”. Everybody also loves how he has sacked Matt Ryan a million times. However, he’s 36 years old right now and he’s on his last legs. He has only recorded six sacks in the past two seasons combined. PFF gave him a 57.4 grade, which 130th out of 211 last season. He’s listed as the starting DE (in a 3-4 scheme) ahead of Bryan Bresee. I fully expect Bryan (who had 7.5 sacks last season) to pass him up in camp.
Bub Means passes up Brandin Cooks
Bub Means isn’t a WR1 on any team, but he can be a WR3 in my opinion. He had excellent flashes, but he couldn’t stay healthy. He ran a 4.43, so he has plenty of juice in him. Meanwhile, Brandin Cooks only recorded 259 yards and three touchdowns last season.
Everybody loves when the pads come on in training camp. Pads simulate the feeling on game day. Each QB also gets a better feel of the physicality and pace. There are also fights that pump up the crowd. Sadly, there’s injuries that happen. However, that’s a part of the game of football.
