AFC South: Ranking Defenses

Best AFC South defenses

By: Jake Rajala

The AFC South blatantly needs more superb players on the defensive side of the ball. I’d argue there is three bottom Top-10 defenses in Tennessee, Jacksonville, and Indianapolis. They simply need to step it up. At least these defenses are young, so they should reap rewards in the next few years.

4. Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans are in a bit of a hole. They need to find “elite” defenders, whether it’s via trade or an early draft pick. They ranked 30th in PPG allowed last season. They were 19th in takeaways, which isn’t dreadful. I’d like to see more aggression and complex looks from them.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jags were dead last in takeaways. They can still count on Travon Walker to make magic happen. He has 20.5 sacks in the last two seasons combined. Arik Armstead, also known as the Walter Payton Man of The Year, is a huge force in the middle. I still need to see more plays from the secondary.

2. Indianapolis Colts

Similar to the Jags, the Colts have a potent DL. They have DeForest Buckner and Kwity Paye. They sadly don’t have Darius Leonard. The Colts weren’t a potent all-around unit. They ranked 25th in PPG allowed last season. I’d like to see them play with their hair on fire.

1. Houston Texans

The Houston Texans arguably have the best pass-rushing tandem in Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson. They also carry an elite DB by the name of Derek Stingley Jr. He had five interceptions last season. The Texans ranked 11th in PPG allowed, which is a modest spot.

The Texans are the only team that has a defense that won’t get squashed by the Buffalo Bills or Baltimore Ravens in my opinion. They have a well-rounded unit that is more gifted than not only the bottom three AFC South defenses, but the vast majority of defenses in the league.
