Shanahan vs Walsh
By: Jake Rajala
The San Francisco 49ers were quite fortunate to have an innovative head coach in Bill Walsh in the 1980s. All he did was invent the west coast offense. This has been copied by countless teams. Kyle Shanahan is the modern day genius HC for the 49ers. He hasn’t won three Super Bowl rings like Walsh, but he has been touted as one of the most creative signal-callers in the league. He knows how to run the ball and spread out the offense, too.
Let’s not forget there were growing pains for Walsh. His first season resulted in a record of 2-14! Ouch. In his second season, he went 6-10. The patience with the 49ers HC paid off. He went 13-3 in his third season. He just happened to win the Super Bowl in the same season! The roller coaster continued. He went 6-10 after his Super Bowl season. The season after his 6-10 year, resulted in another Super Bowl victory. In Walsh’s last season, he went to the big dance and won!
Walsh had a Top-5 scoring offense on four instances. He also had a Top-10 scoring offense on eight ocassions.
Shanny is a bit of magical coach. Similar to Walsh, he had a rough start. He went 10-22 in his first two seasons combined. In his third season, he was an NFC Champion. In 2023, he was an NFC Champion again!
He had a Top-5 scoring offense two times.
Shanny is arguably a Top-5 HC in the league today, but he didn’t change the game forever. I have to give props to Walsh for his long, successful, innovating tenure.
If Shanny can win a couple of Super Bowls, I wouldn’t be surprised if 49ers nation put him in the same conversation as Walsh. I hope he stays with the 49ers longer than Jim Harbaugh did with the squad.
