Lawrence Taylor vs J.J. Watt: who has the edge?

LT vs Watt

By: Jake Rajala

J.J. Watt is from another planet. As a Walk-on at Wisconsin, he has proven to have the best work ethic in the football world. Watt played 10 seasons in Houston and then a couple of seasons in Arizona.

Watt was a part of the 2010 all decade team, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to fans. All he did was make 114.5 sacks, 195 TFLs, and 70 pass deflections. He could dominate in the passing game and in the running game. Not only was he a sack master, but his nickname “JJ Swatt” comes from his ability to swat down passes.

Watt won three DPOY awards! He’s been named to the Pro Bowl five times and first team All-Pro five times

If Watt was the best defender in the 21st century, does that make him the best defender of all time? There are a few defenders who could push him for that title. I know Reggie White could. I also believe LT can, as well. So, I’m going to pick LT for the conversation today.

Taylor was a man amongst boys. He was the fastest edge defender in the league. He could drop into coverage, which would surprise offenses.

Taylor’s attitude was unmatched. Buddy Ryan blindsided LT with a blocker, and it worked out too well. Taylor took his anger out on the Jets QB by sacking him afterward.

LT has won three DPOY awards, been named to 10 Pro Bowls, and he’s been first-team All-Pro eight times.

Not only has LT been named to twice as many Pro Bowls as Watt, but he also has enjoyed more success in the playoffs. He has won two Super Bowls, while Watt hasn’t won any.

I believe that Micah Parsons is the modern day LT. He can play anywhere on defense, has incredible agility and speed, and plays with a high motor all day. I hope Parsons can help the Packers win a Lombardi, just as LT did twice.
