Could Wentz be the Vikings answer at QB?

Carson Wentz was once a favorite to win MVP. His glory days with the Philadelphia Eagles are far in the rearview mirror. He tried to revamp his career with the Indianapolis Colts. He actually had a modest 2021 season where he went 9-8 and threw 27 TDs to 7 ints in Indy.
Wentz moved around a few squads as a back-up QB. He wound up in Minnesota in 2025. He is 32 years old and looking to succeed in a Vikings offense that has Kevin O’Connell calling plays and Justin Jefferson playing at a high level.
Wentz isn’t overly old, as he’s 32 years old. If Geno Smith can shine in his mid 30s and Ryan Fitzpatrick can make magic happen in his late 30s, Wentz can turn back the clock at his age.
Wentz was sharp in his performance against the Bengals. He had two touchdowns, and he was 14 of 20 completions in Week 3.
With that noted, something should click. It’s noticeable that Wentz played better in Week 3 than McCarthy played against a putrid Falcons defense. J.J. threw 0 TDs to 2 ints against a Falcons defense that gave up 30 points to the Panthers.
J.J. had very few good quarters in his first three games. He has a lot of arm talent and quality play-calling on his side. He shouldn’t be playing like he’s on a roller coaster or fluky.
I believe that if Sam Darnold can play well under Kevin O’Connell, Wentz can continue to shine. I really believe that the Vikings would have kept Sam if they knew J.J. would have struggled like this.
It also makes sense for the Vikings to retain Wentz, because this is the second injury that J.J. has suffered in two straight seasons.
The Vikings play in one of the most competitive divisions, as the Packers and Lions are both Super Bowl contenders. They can’t be too patient in the frigid NFC North. If Wentz plays well in each of the next couple of weeks, they should go with the hot hand. They can welcome a QB battle with McCarthy in the off-season.
