Will Mike McDaniel survive the season?
By: Jake Rajala
The young, Ivy League grad, Mike McDaniel came to the Miami Dolphins in 2022 with a plan to help Tua Tagovailoa win football games. McDaniel came out of his first season with a respectable 9-8 record. He turned on the heat in his second season by going 11-6. The Phins sadly lost in the wild-card round.
The train went south after the season, as the Phins went 8-9 in 2024. Mike hasn’t exactly improved from last season, as they’re 0-3. To make matters worse, two of their losses came against AFC East foes (Patriots, Bills).
The Phins play the Jets in Week 4. The Jets are also winless and hoping to get their first win.
A polarizing, key question surrounds McDaniel: Will he get fired this season?
I suspect that McDaniel needs to have a winning record and not be the last AFC East team for the rest of the season. He has too much talent (Tua, Tyreek Hill, De’Von Achane) to struggle like this.
McDaniel has not only went through many losses, but he’s struggled to beat teams with a winning record. Through 2024, he had a record of 3-15 against winning teams.
I’d like to see McDaniel upset the Bills in their second match-up. That could save a lot of heat on McDaniel.
If McDaniel’s offense shines and has a winning record from the remaining schedule, but his defense struggles, I’d like to see McDaniel stay and his DC axed. It would be intriguing to see McDaniel and Rex Ryan join forces.
I don’t believe McDaniel will survive the rest of the season. I foresee him being an offensive coordinator for a talented team with an HC that’s a defensive mind next season.
