7 potential trade destinations for Mac Jones

Mac Jones trade spots

By: Jake Rajala

Mac Jones has been a true winner in his two starts. He’s 2-0 and he’s thrown 4 TDs to 1 int thus far. With that said, It’s only a matter of time before Brock Purdy returns. Well, I would expect Jones to be in consideration for a trade. He has QB1 ability. He just needs a sharp offensive mind and a modest supporting cast. With that said, I’m going to lay out five potential trade destinations for Jones.

Minnesota Vikings

It’s sad for Vikings fans when they have to hear whether Carson Wentz is better than J.J. McCarthy. Well, I believe it’s a no brainer than Jones is better than both of them. J.J. needs more time to develop his ability. Jones could have similar success that Sam Darnold had in Minny. I even believe that Jones could bring them further, as Darnold sputtered out in the playoffs.

Denver Broncos

PFF has dubbed Bo Nix as the worst starting QB right now. Nix is simply struggling a lot. This is surprising since he has the wiz Sean Payton calling the shots and Pro Bowl WR Courtland Sutton at his disposal. With that said, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they brought in competition. Payton had some success with Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill, who are both versatile QBs.

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons have two backup quality QBs in my opinion. Micahel Penix and Kirk Cousins aren’t meant to be QB1s right now. It’s especially shocking that they struggle with Drake London, Bijan Robinson, and Kyle Pitts in their offense. Jones could also play in a dome in Atlanta.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The 41 year old Aaron Rodgers will most likely hang up his cleats after this season. They need a future QB not named Mason Rudolph, who is below average as a passer (and a fighter). Jones would have the Pro Bowl WR DK Metcalf to utilize. I’d like to see them add another WR, to be fair. He does get a modest defense led by T.J. Watt to play with, however.

Los Angeles Rams

I suspect that Super Bowl Champion Matthew Stafford will retire within a couple of seasons. I’d love to see Jones groomed to replace him. Jones is an impressive pocket passer. He could be a Pro Bowler with Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. Jones is also six years younger than Jimmy G. Jones also takes better care of the football than even Matthew Stafford.

New England Patriots

Jones had some success under Josh McDaniels. After all, he went to the Pro Bowl as a rookie. Perhaps Jones feels like he improved his throwing ability, so he’s ready to master the mental side of McDaniel’s scheme. Drake Maye has really dazzled over the past two seasons in NE. I’d love to see Jones practice more of the short passing and play-action, which fits well into his skillset. He could learn more in NE and then head to a team where he could start.

San Francisco 49ers

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

Mac Jones has been playing like the best backup QB in the league. He doesn’t have to be a starter quite yet. Brock Purdy has been injured before, so it’s vital that SF has a modest backup QB. We witnessed Nick Foles win a Super Bowl as a backup. I believe Jones could have a similar path. I still don’t believe that Jones could take Purdy’s job, however.
