Waiver Wire adds for Week 9
By: Jake Rajala
Week 9 had a lot of tight (often) divisional showdowns. Waiver Wire is bound to be juicy and full of underrated players at this stage. So, let’s begin.
Cleveland Browns defense
The Cleveland Browns unleashed 26 points against the Dolphins in Week 7. Well, they didn’t slow down in Week 9. They scored 11 points against the Pats at 1 pm on Sunday. It helped that Myles Garrett had five sacks! Yes, you read that correctly. The Browns defense has also had two games of at least 9 points, as well.
Justin Fields
It’s safe to say that Justin Fields had the biggest chip on his shoulder among QBs, after he was called out by Woody Johnson this past week. Well, Fields was elusive and smart with the football. He had 20.86 points. That was his fourth 20+ point contest. It’s also impressive that he’s 26 years old. He should have an opportunity to start next season, with or without the Jets.
New Orleans Saints defense
The Saints defense had 21 points against the GMEN. They haven’t repeated that performance until I watched them today. Not only did they perform well, but they did a fine job against an elite offense. They are tightening up everything, and Chase Young has shined since he returned last week. He had a strip sack today.
Alec Pierce
Don’t sleep on Indianapolis Colts deep threat WR Alec Pierce. He had many catches with the Colts from shot plays last season. He’s had three games of at least 10 points. He had a season high 14.8 points last week. With defenses focusing on JT, things really open up for Pierce and Michael Pittman Jr.
Tyler Loop
The Baltimore Ravens were able to get the win, largely thanks to Tyler Loop. He converted on three long field goals. Loop had 12, 7, and 9 points in the first few weeks, which is admirable. The Ravens are bound to be in many more tight division contests, which spells more field goals.
Noah Fant
Fant was on my list last week. He recorded 14 points last week and then had 7 points from Joe Flacco today. I believe that 7 is the floor from the TE. They need to design more plays with him because defenses won’t allow Chase to get 30+ points every week. It’s also a serious challenge to find a sneaky good TE at this point.
Joe Flacco
I added Joe Flacco last week, even with Drake Maye on my roster. I don’t want to play against Flacco, to say the least. After 25.98 points last week, Joe Cool unleashed 24.32 points. Flacco is a wise veteran. He knows the strengths of Chase, Tee Higgins, and Fant. Flacco should be a Top-15 QB with his arsenal moving forward.
Tyler Shough
It’s hard to not love the upside on Tyler Shough. He performed nicely in the prior preseason and barely lost the gig to Spencer Rattler. He was a second round pick by Who Dat Nation, so they clearly love his upside. He should be able to stretch the field with his arm strength and make sharp read option plays and QB power with his legs.
Malik Washington
Malik Washington has had a fine two game stretch over the past two weeks. He had 8 points in Week 7 and then 13.6 points today. Malik performed well, despite Jaylen Waddle having 20.9 points, which is promising. He had 8 targets last week and then a TD this week. He’s well-rounded and a baller.
Michael Penix
Michael Penix has been on a bit of a roller coaster. He had 19.72 points, 14.6 points, and then 12.24 points over the past few weeks. He hasn’t had any game above 20 points. I still like him not only more than Spencer Rattler, but J.J. McCarthy. His offense is also quite impressive with Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson.
Cairo Santos
Cairo Santos is playing well in his return. Jake Moody filled in for him. Santons has played quite well in limited time this season. He had 19 points in Week 4 and then 10 points in Week 8. He is 33 years old, so he’s not getting any younger, however.
Jake Elliot
Jake Elliot has done a fine job with Philly over the years. He has shown that he can be reliable in the season or playoffs. He recorded 8 points today, which was his fifth game with at least five points. It’s not a lot of points, but he’s reliable to get on the board.
There are many different types of players on this list. With that said, there are a couple of QBs (Marcus Mariota and Tyler Huntley) that will return to their backup role in Week 9, so they didn’t make the list.
