Could Maye really win MVP?

The New England Patriot, Drake Maye, has been one of the most pleasant surprises this season. He took a step forward, after being a first round pick in 2024. Maye leads the league in completion percentage, and he is third in passing yards. He is accomplishing impressive feats, despite not having many prominent weapons outside of Stefon Diggs. To be fair, the GOAT Tom Brady was left with high expectations and average weapons toward the end of his career.
With that said, the ultimate question is: Could Drake Maye win MVP? The answer is: absolutely.
Not only is Maye shredding defenses, but he is also a winner. He is 9-2 this season. He has already beaten the Buffalo Bills. Yes, you read that correctly.
The last Patriot to win MVP was obviously Tom Brady. He had a rare combination of lighting up the scoreboard and winning games. He was half Drew Brees and half Joe Montana.
Let’s be honest: the MVP is a quarterback’s award. The Bills QB Josh Allen won the award last season. The last non QB to win MVP was Adrian Peterson in 2012. Yikes. The Offensive Player of the Year award is more open to non QBs.
So, who else is pushing for MVP? The Los Angeles QB, Matthew Stafford, is the other top, realistic candidate. Stafford is fourth in passing yards and first in passing touchdowns. The only drawback to Stafford’s case is that he just lost to the Carolina Panthers. I also don’t have complete faith in him having the same record as Maye at the end of the day, as Stafford competes in the wild NFC West.
Even if Stafford or a darkhorse like Dak Prescott wins MVP, Maye should feel comfortable being that he is in his second season. He could follow in the footsteps of Patrick Mahomes, by regularly being an MVP candidate.
Maye may not have thrown 5 touchdowns in a game, but he is a pillar of consistency. He has eight games of at least 2 passing touchdowns. He also has had seven games of a completion percentage of at least 69%. I’d like to see Maye clean it up a little, however. He has had four interceptions in the past five games.
