Will Gibbs win OPOY?
By: Jake Rajala
It’s widely reported: Jahmyr Gibbs has tied with the OG Barry Sanders for the record of 47 touchdowns in a player’s first few seasons. That would be 47 touchdowns. I’m not saying he’s on the same level as Barry Sanders, who is a Hall of Famer. Nonetheless, Gibbs has had a magical start to his career.
So far this season, Gibbs has recorded 1,062 rushing yards, 13 rushing touchdowns, and 474 receiving yards. Despite an incredible touchdown streak, he doesn’t have an overly impressive total yards. He sits eighth in total yards (1,536).
Sanders unleashed 1,304 rushing yards, 13 rushing touchdowns, and 480 receiving yards in his second season. We have a tendency to adore highlight reels over total production, and Sanders had more “wow” moments than Gibbs. His jukes were next level.
In fact, Gibbs is on a path to be considered for the Offensive Player of the Year. Just as MVP is often a QB’s award, OPOY awards have recently gone to the running back. Saquon Barkley won OPOY last season and Christian McCaffrey won the award in the season before.
I would love to see more wins for Gibbs, however. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a sharp candidate for OPOY right now, and he has a record of 10-3. Meanwhile, Gibbs holds a record of 8-5, and his squad sits third in the division.
So a bigger question arises: Could Gibbs win MVP?
I don’t think so.
The Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford and New England Patriots QB Drake Maye are the two top dogs for the MVP award, in my opinion. They both have incredible stats, and they both have the number one seeds in their conference. They both are gutsy and have impressive deep throws, to say the least.
