Who will win COTY?
By: Jake Rajala
Sean Payton has built the Denver Broncos brick by brick in the right way. In his first season, he unleashed a winning record of 10-7. He brought in Bo Nix to be the solution, and he has taken the proper steps. Despite having a somewhat slow start to his career, he has progressed. He’s had the opposite of a sophomore slump.
Not only has Payton pressed the right buttons with Nix and the offense, but he has a winning record of 11-2. That just happens to be a tie with the New England Patriots. The Broncos have had notable wins against the likes of the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, and Houston Texans. They have demolished their weak foes, which is expected from an elite team like Denver.
This raises the question: Should Payton win COTY?
The COTY odds from BETMGM showcase Payton as the eighth favorite choice to win the award. I believe it’s very disrespectful. Payton isn’t only winning a lot, but he competes in one of the most challenging divisions in the league. Meanwhile, the New England Patriots get the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins in their division. Hence, it’s not an overly tough division for the Pats.
In the remainder of the Broncos schedule, they play the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Chargers, and the Kansas City Chiefs. If Payton and his squad can run the table, I believe he has to be the favorite to win the award.
Payton has already won the award once. This happened all the way back in 2006! It was his first season with the legend Drew Brees.
I would put Mike Macdonald up there with Payton. He holds a prominent record (10-3) and he fights in one of the most prolific divisions in the league. He will face the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers before the season end. If he can defeat the two squads, I would say he should be strongly considered for the COTY award.
