Grading the Todd Monken signing

Reflecting on the Todd Monken signing

By: Jake Rajala

It’s official: the Cleveland Browns are signing Todd Monken. Do I like it? Yes, I do. The Browns know first hand how creative and effective Monken is, as he was the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator from 2023-2025. Will he still have some big shoes to fill? Absolutely. Kevin Stefanski was a 2x Coach of the Year.

Monken has been the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator since 2023. He ran a slightly above average offense last season. However, his offense was off the charts in 2024. The Ravens offense ranked third in PPG and first in YPG in 2024. Derrick Henry ran for 2k yards under him. He should really know how to open the offense up with the running game. I’d prefer to see them draft a RB on Day 2. Dylan Sampson is pegged as their top RB right now. He has 175 rushing yards and he’s averaged 2.7 YPC. In other words, they really need a RB.

Shedeur Sanders isn’t Lamar Jackson, but he can make magic happen outside of the pocket. I believe he has Caleb Williams upside. They both are magical at evading pass rushers and accurate at throwing across the field. Of course, Shedeur can take some unfortunate sacks with this style of play.

With that said, I believe the grade of the signing is a B. I don’t believe Monken is the best choice. If I’m being brutally honest, I’d like to see them get Mike McCarthy over Monken. Mike had three 12 win seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. I would take him over Jim Schwartz, however. Jim had his shot as an HC and he didn’t stand out. I’d also like to see them take an offensive mind, so they can properly develop Shedeur.

It was wise to bring in Todd. However, If I have to be honest, I believe Kevin shouldn’t have been fired in the first place. He was stuck with a rookie QB and a below average group of weapons. I’d load up on more talent on offense and see how Kevin does, before firing him.
