Josh McDaniels brings home the gold

Josh McDaniels proved to be one of the best play-callers in the league this season. His quarterback, Drake Maye, is an MVP candidate. Maye was fourth in passing yards and third in passing touchdowns. He had a PFF grade of 90.1, which is third among QBs. More importantly, he won 14 games! Matthew Stafford is an MVP candidate, and he only won 12 games. Of course, Stafford still led the league in passing touchdowns and passing yards.
So, if Stafford outplayed Maye, why didn’t his play-caller win Assistant Coach of the Year? Well, McVay was his player caller and he’s an “head coach” and not an assistant coach. I believe the second coach that would win Assistant Coach of the Year is none other than Klint Kubiak. Sam Darnold isn’t the most talented QB, yet the Seahawks still ranked second in PPG and the Hawks also won 14 games.
I don’t want to be dark. However, the question deserves to be asked: Why can’t McDaniels be an head coach? After all, Kubiak is in line to be the head coach of the Raiders. Last season, Ben Johnson was one of the best assistant coaches and he got a job as an HC with the Chicago Bears.
Well, McDaniels has struggled to win. He hasn’t had a winning season, and he had a record of 20-33. To cut him some slack, he hasn’t had a Pro Bowl-caliber QB at any team he was on.
I want to see McDaniels get another HC shot. Perhaps he could take over for the Washington Commanders or Tennessee Titans in 2027. Jayden Daniels brought him team to the NFC Championship in his rookie season and Cam Ward has freakish ability.
Sadly, there are not any openings right now. Just as Buddy Ryan was a legendary defensive coordinator, McDaniels is a mythical offensive coordinator.
McDaniels has too many Super Bowl wins to throw in the towel and decide not to be an head coach.
