Best backup QB targets for the Broncos
By: Jake Rajala
The former New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham proved that he didn’t deserve to be the QB2 for the Denver Broncos. In the AFC Championship, he unleashed a rating of 63. He led his team to score seven points against his former team. Ouch. With that said, I’m going to unfold backup QB targets for the Broncos.
Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson is a backup QB at this stage in his career. Well, the good news is that he has chemistry with Sean Payton and the Broncos. At 37 years old, I believe he will retire after a couple more seasons. Wilson should go into the Seahawks Ring of Honor when it’s all said and done.
Taysom Hill
Sean Payton once compared Taysom Hill to Steve Young. If he really loves Hill , let’s see if Payton signs him. Taysom Hill is bound to be a free agent this offseason. Hill is old (as he’s 35) for a running back or WR, but he can still sling the ball at the QB spot. Hill is a better version of Tim Tebow. Hill can run a 4.4 and squat 600+ pounds.
Teddy Bridgewater
Teddy B went 5-0 under Payton when Drew Brees went down. He’s a superb game manager. Payton knows the strengths and flaws of Bridgewater. He isn’t quite washed up yet, at 33 years old. I believe he has a few seasons left in him. He has a career record of 33-32.
Carson Wentz
Similar to Wilson, Carson Wentz is meant to be a backup QB right now. There is nothing wrong with that. He still has modest arm strength and legs to break out of the pocket and throw a bomb to his weapons. At least, Wentz outplayed J.J. McCarthy last season for the Vikings. Wentz went 2-3 last season.
Jimmy G
The former NFC Champion, Jimmy G, is still an accurate thrower and field general. He has just had issues staying on the field across an 18 week season. I’d love to see Jimmy G with an elite play-caller. Kyle Shanahan was able to get some magic out of him. He is 34, so I expect him to only play a few more seasons at most.
Trey Lance
The former NDSU legend and third overall pick, Trey Lance, is similar to former first round pick and Colts QB Anthony Richardson. Lance is one of the fastest QBs in the game, and he has impressive arm strength. He just has issues being consistent and reading the defense. Perhaps a QB wiz like Payton can turn around his career.
Zach Wilson
Zach Wilson is the same age as me and Tyler Shough (who just won Pepsi’s OROY award). Wilson can really shine in space throwing the football. Luckily, Payton loves the play-action game. Wilson was a second overall pick because he has impressive arm talent. He just needs an elite play-caller, a quality running game, and a couple of prominent weapons.
