Biggest needs for the Saints
By: Jake Rajala
The New Orleans Saints enter the 2026 offseason with some holes. They are somewhat well-rounded, and they appear to have their true franchise quarterback in Tyler Shough. I’m afraid that’s not enough if they want to go on a deep playoff run. With that said, I’m going to lay out the 5 biggest needs for the Saints.
WR
The Saints have been heavily rumored to draft a WR in round one. The Arizona State wideout Jordyn Tyson has been labeled a fit for the Saints. Chris Olave was second team All-Pro last season. However, they still need a superb WR2 and quality WR3. I’d like to see them reel in former ally, Rashid Shaheed, who can be their WR3. The current Saints wideout DeVaughn Vele could be the WR3.
RB
Alvin Kamara has been regarded as a trade candidate, given that he hasn’t played up to his hefty contract. The Broncos and Sean Payton have been seen as a sharp fit. Kamara was a Pro Bowl RB under Payton. The former Saints HC loves screens, which go along well Kamara’s ability to make defenders miss in open space.
DT
The former Saints first round pick, DT Bryan Bresee, has a wicked spin move and is a pressure machine. So, it’s expected that he shines in key passing downs. Nonetheless, he’s not Vince Wilfork in the running game. The Saints need another DT to be stout against the run. The Saints ranked 19th in rushing YPG allowed a season ago.
MLB
Demario Davis will most likely play one more season at most. Pete Werner is an average MLB. He had a PFF grade of 56.4, which was 55th among LBs. I’d love to see Davis have a sidekick that could be a DROY candidate. The Saints have always had impressive MLBs. They need to have one ready to replace Davis.
DE
Just as Davis will likely retire soon at MLB, I expect Cam Jordan to hang up his cleats at the DE spot soon. Jordan is an impressive edge rusher, so it won’t be easy to replace the future Hall of Famer. He recorded 10.5 sacks a season ago. They have Chase Young and Carl Granderson, but they love to rotate the starting two DEs with two new DEs.
Honorable Mention
Swiss Army Knife
Yes, I expect Taysom Hill to retire or go to the Broncos (with Sean Payton). Hill has been one of the most versatile skill players in the league. He can run, catch, and even block. I’d love to see the Saints bring in Deebo Samuel to fill in his shoes. Samuel can play RB and WR. He reminds me of Percy Harvin.
