Backup QB candidates for the Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are a heavyweight NFC team. If they want to be well-rounded and not take any risk, they need to be secure with their backup QB spot. Right now, it’s Stetson Bennett. In other words, they can’t afford to lose Matthew Stafford. So, I’m going to lay out backup QB options for the Rams.
Jimmy G
It’s been widely reported that the LA Rams are intrigued in bringing “back” Jimmy G. He was with them in 2025 and 2024. It’s great for Rams fans that he only had to play one time. That may sound like too much for die-hard fans, however. Jimmy G is 34 years old. He likely has 2-3 seasons left. He has an impressive career record of 43-21.
Kirk Cousins
Captain Kirk also has “some” gas left in the tank. He played impressive football in the back half of last season. He went 5-3 and threw 10 TDs to 5 ints. Since 2014, He only has had two losing seasons. It would be an understatement to say he’s wise with the football.
Derek Carr
The only reason I’m listing the former Raiders and Saints QB Derek Carr here is if Stafford gets injured and it’s an emergency. I don’t believe they will ride with Stetson Bennett, especially if it’s in the playoffs or late in the season.
Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson isn’t completely washed up yet. He was in a dire situation in the Big Apple. In 2024, he made the Pro Bowl with the Steelers. He threw 16 TDs to five ints in the same year. He is 37 years old, which is the same age as Cousins. Hence, he will likely retire within three seasons max.
Taylor Heinicke
Taylor Heinicke once almost took down Tom Brady in the playoffs. Let’s hope he didn’t peak then. Taylor didn’t play last season, so he should be fresh and ready to go. He is 33 years old, which is younger than everybody else on this list. In 2022, he went 5-3-1, so there’s some respect to be given.
Jameis Winston
Similar to Stafford, Jameis Winston has a cannon for an arm. He can wreak havoc in the play-action game, which is popular for McVay. Winston likes to learn under elite offensive minds. That was why he went to the Saints (where Sean Payton was). Then he went to the Browns, where two-time COTY Kevin Stefanski resided.
Spencer Rattler
The Saints are committed to the runner up OROY, Tyler Shough, which could make Spencer Rattler somewhat expendable. Rattler could not only help if Stafford goes down, but he could also be the future QB after Stafford retires! Rattler has freakish arm strength and he has underrated speed out of the pocket.
