Is Hutch untradeable?
By: Jake Rajala
The former Michigan Wolverine, Aidan Hutchinson, has been splendid at the professional level. “Hutch” was second team All-Pro last season. It’s not hard to see why not. He simply unleashed 14.5 sacks, 35 QB hits, and 14 TFLs. It’s very impressive that he’s been awfully productive at the age of 25.
With that said, a pivotal question surrounds him: Is he untradeable? I have to pull out the quote from John Wick, “Everything got a price”.
I don’t believe he could be traded anytime soon. The Lions are a Super Bowl contender that missed the playoffs last season. I know it’s hard to wrap your head around my statement. As long as Jared Goff is on the roster, I expect Hutch to be on board.
To be fair, we’ve seen elite edge rushers switch teams. Khalil Mack was traded, Trey Hendrickson left Cincy, J.J. Watt left Houston, and Danielle Hunter left Minnesota.
So, what would it take for a team to lure away Hutch from the Lions?
I’d imagine that a team would have to offer at least a couple of first round picks. I’d like to see them include a DL in the trade, too. It would have to be similar to the “Micah Parsons trade”. That trade included two first round picks and a DL (Kenny Clark).
The Cowboys traded away Parsons when they were a borderline playoff team. They recognized the need for a new DL, so they acquired Quinnen Williams. I can’t foresee the Lions making the same mistake.
The Cowboys also had the worst defense in PPG allowed last season. Clearly, they were missing Parsons. The Lions were 22nd in PPG allowed a season ago. If they let Hutch leave, they will be duking it out with the Boys for the worst defense.
I’d even like to see the Raiders attempt to bring in someone like Maxx Crosby or Myles Garrett. Trade rumors have surrounded both of them. We’ve seen the power of two superior pass rushers on one team. The Houston Texans were second in PPG allowed last season and they had Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson.
Goff isn’t able to carry a team with a putrid defense. Joe Burrow has played like an MVP candidate, but he can’t escape a poor defense (as it’s 30th in PPG allowed). Drew Brees knew all about playing with wretched defenses, too. He would throw 5k yards and still miss the playoffs, because he couldn’t carry his deficient defense.
