Bills vs Browns: 5 things we learned in Week 2

Bills vs Browns: reflection

By: Jake Rajala

It wasn’t glorious for Cleveland Browns fans in Week 2. They didn’t impress with their starters or back-ups. They lost 31-7. Yes, you read that right. With that said, I’m going to discuss five things we learned in Week 2.

Browns QBs

Let’s get the obvious topic out of the way. Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders both threw an interception in their limited performance. At least, Sanders threw a touchdown and had an completion percentage of 82%. He out-played Watson, who went 5-12, 36 yards, and an interception. Right now, Shedeur has to be the favorite to start.

Weak Browns running game

It may be tempting to try and lure Kareem Hunt back into a Browns uniform. The Browns running game was absent in Week 2. They Raheim Sanders had 12 carries for 31 yards, which averaged 2.6 YPC. Ahmani Marshall had 8 carries for 18 yards. It’s safe to say Jim Brown wouldn’t be pleased with this performance.

Kyle Allen

Kyle Allen sure looked like Josh Allen. He went 10-12, 128 passing yards, and a touchdown. If he continues to play at a high level, he may have a few teams interested in his services. It’s safe to say that Allen has proven to be more effective then former Bills QB2 Mitchell Trubisky. Nonetheless, it’s quite early in the pre-season.

Bills running game

I was impressed with the running game from the Bills. Ian Wheeler had 56 yards rushing and and Frank Gore Jr had 56 rushing yards. Wheeler averaged 4.0 YPC, while Frank Gore Jr averaged 6 YPC! Ray Davis also had a rushing touchdown. The Bills are trying to figure out a world where they need to have a strong running game without James Cook.

Pass protection

Although, there was pressure put on by both teams, there was only a sack made by each team. Clearly, the pass protection was stout and good enough to put each QB in a situation to succeed. I don’t believe either team needs to make a blockbuster trade for an OL in the near future.

The Bills and Browns are two scrappy teams right now. I have to be honest and say that the Bills are a step ahead of the Browns. The Bills QB (Allen) played better than either Browns QB. It isn’t that Allen is more talented than both Browns QB. It’s just mostly that he is in a better situation to succeed!
