Who will be the Colts QB2?

Projecting the Colts QB2

By: Jake Rajala

There has been a lot of intrigue surrounding the Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback competition. It’s between the former first round pick Anthony Richardson and 2025 sixth round pick Riley Leonard. I believe the Colts have some comfort in who they pick. As a die-hard Saints fan, there isn’t a QB worthy of being the QB2.

With that said, I’m going to lay out how each QB is doing and unfold who should be the backup.

Richardson was a slightly above average QB last week. He recorded 24 yards, a 33.3%, and a 42.4 RTG. In Week 1, he recorded 145 yards passing, a rushing touchdown, an interception, and a passer rating of 80.1. To be fair, he did have 53 yards rushing in Week 1, as well.

Richardson is said to be starting the last pre-season game. Obvioiusly, they want their big investment to prove he can put it all together and show he can be the QB2 and potentially QB1.

Riley Leonard isn’t a true starting QB, but he can take care of the football and be consistent in the short passing game. He reminds me a lot of Teddy Bridgewater.

With that said, Leonard has been somewhat less than average in his two pre-season games. He was 50% in his passes last week and then 47.6 in his throws two weeks ago. I would have liked to see him or Richardson throw a touchdown. So, Richardson can really get a leg up in the competition, if he reaches the end-zone.

Here is a clip of his ability.

It’s Richardson’s job to lose right now. He can make plays with his arms and legs. He’s also not making too many silly throws.

Daniel Jones is the clear-cut favorite to be the QB1. He unleashed an 8-5 record. He had 19 passing touchdowns to eight interceptions.

I don’t want to see the Colts bring in another QB. At all. Not only is Richardson worthy of the QB2 spot, but he is still young. He is 24 years old!
