roster moves by the Saints
By: Jake Rajala
The cut down to 53 players is never easy. There are always surprises and dissapointments. With that said, I’m going to discuss “surprise” moves by the Saints in this process.
Keeping Zach Wilson
The Saints decided to roll with three quarterbacks on their roster. I’m not a big fan of this. They have Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler. They didn’t even listen to trade offers for Rattler. I’d rather see them move on from Wilson and bring back Taysom Hill! At least he would see the field.
Cutting Zamir White
I don’t love that the Saints traded for Zamir White and then cut him. They should have found a RB that would make the 53 man roster. However, they did bring him back to the practice squad. I expect him to be promoted off and on throughout the season, unless a team signs him to their 53 man roster.
Not adding another RB
I’m surprised the Saints didn’t bring in another RB during this time. Alvin Kamara is injured and Kendre Miller is the most injury prone RB in the league. Audric Estime isn’t ready to be a bell-cow RB if he’s called to be. I’d love to see the Saints bring in a veteran RB ASAP.
Keeping Noah Fant
Noah Fant is a modest tight end right now. Obviously, Juwan Johnson is ahead of him on the depth chart. I believe Oscar Delp should get reps at TE2. In other words, I’m surprised they are keeping Noah Fant. They could get a draft pick or “WR” in return.
Not adding another safety
The Saints haven’t properly replace the Honey Badger in my opinion. They have Justin Reid at SS, but they don’t have a second SS. They have Julian Blackmon at FS and then Jonas Sanker to be the backup to Blackmon. They are asking a lot of him to be the backup to Reid, too.
The Saints aren’t perfect in this process. They may regret some moves early in the season. I just want to see them stay aggressive and open-minded to adjusting some positions. They have suffered more injuries than most teams already. So, it’s extra pivotal that they are wise moving forward.
