J.J. McCarthy trade recap
By: Jake Rajala
It’s official: the New York football Giants have traded for former Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Is it controversial? Absolutely. After all, McCarthy has been a bust with the Vikings. What makes the GMEN want to bring him in?
McCarthy has been benched in favor of not only Kyler Murray, but Carson Wentz, as well. With that said, the Giants must see something they like from his rookie season. He does have arm talent, so they may feel like they can unlock him with short, quick passes, and deep passes “on occasion”.
We witnessed fellow, young QB Michael Penix have his best game as a Falcon last week. He threw for a 72% completion percentage, 256 passing yards, and a touchdown. He threw a lot of screens to Drake London, who had 194 yards. Malik Nabers can be to J.J. what London was to Penix.
So, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. What grade would I give him? I’d honestly give this a B- for the Giants.
I believe McCarthy will improve from his days where he struggled. If he doesn’t shine as a starter, they still have a QB in him that has a lot of upside. He is 23 years old, which is four years younger than Tyler Shough.
I would hand a Vikings a B+ for this move. I don’t believe J.J. would start for the Vikings at one point. He was their third string QB. It was wise to get a draft pick for him. It was a 2027 fifth round pick. They can use the pick to acquire a new QB or skill player.
I didn’t love Jameis Winston as a starter, to say the least. He can motivate the team, but he’s not worthy of starting on the Giants.
With that all said, I’d still love to see the Giants reel in a new QB for competition. Mac Jones and Mitchell Trubisky are a couple of names that come to mind.
If the Giants are contempt with McCarthy at QB1, I believe they will miss the playoffs. They shouldn’t take their foot off the pedal.
