Best replacements for Kellen Moore
By: Jake Rajala
The New Orleans Saints are not sitting pretty at 1-4. The Kellen Moore-Tyler Shough duo went 5-4 last season, yet they are far worse this season. It’s hard to place a lot of blame on Shough, as he’s in his second season. The most blame falls on Kellen Moore’s shoulders. With that said, I’m going to lay out potential replacements for the former Eagle.
Eric Bieniemy
The Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, knows how to create a lethal defense. Kenneth Walker and Patrick Mahomes are both MVP candidates. The Saints really need to improve their running game, which will help their play-action game. Bieniemy has a very diverse running game. It’s far from simple, which makes defenses confused.
Brian Flores
Doesn’t Brian Flores look familiar? Well, he happens to be the Vikings defensive coordinator who blitzed Tyler Shough out of the building last Sunday. Flores could really utilize Chase Young, Danny Stutsman, and Bryan Bresee to a very high level. Flores shouldn’t have been fired before and he deserves a second chance.
Kliff Kingsbury
Kliff Kingsbury may not be the best team builder, but he knows how to create a dangerous QB. I don’t love that Kyler Murray missed several games in 2022, which happened to be Kliff’s worst season (4-13). In other words, you can’t place all the blame on Kliff. Kingsbury also went to the Los Angeles Rams team, which will only help his resume.
Jon Gruden
Everybody loves Jon Gruden’s football mind. He is one of the best QB whisperers. He also has a gift (merchandise etc.) from every football organization. Gruden has made mistakes, but he’s still human. After all, many elite athletes and coaches have messed up off the field. Gruden also loves the Saints, to put it simply.
Jim Harbaugh
It wouldn’t be a massive surprise if the Chargers and Jim Harbaugh mutually parted ways. It should be noted that Harbaugh hasn’t even won a game this season. All the blame can’t be put on Mike McDaniel’s shoulders. Harbaugh still has a very impressive resume and he isn’t overly old in coaching years.
In the end, I’d love to see Moore turn it around with the Saints and have a near .500 record to finish the season. It would be easier for Shough to improve with the current regime than pull the plug on everything.
