Should McCarthy start for the Giants?
By: Jake Rajala
The New Orleans Saints were pouring it on the New York Giants in the game today. The Giants inserted McCarthy for “garbage time”. He did a lot more than lay down once he came in. He really proved he can play QB in this league. He threw an interception, but he unleashed 243 passing yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter! He was throwing every type of throw and he wasn’t showing fear.
McCarthy was on the verge of tying the game. It was 4th and 1 and McCarthy couldn’t quite connect with his target. McCarthy has a better deep throw than Winston in my opinion. He connected with Malik Nabers for a huge chunk. He can also make plays with his legs. The Saints blitzed the cornerback and McCarthy stepped up and ran for a first down.
With that said, this raises the question: Should McCarthy start over Jameis Winston?
I’d like to see McCarthy start. I believe he has a higher ceiling than Winston. Winston can be a fine game manager, but I believe McCarthy can make magic happen. They will need McCarthy to play his best football against teams like the 49ers or even Chicago. The Giants should have lost to the Commanders under Winston. Winston also struggled against the “1-4” Saints today! If McCarthy played the game from start to finish, I honestly believe the GMEN would have came away with the victory. The Saints had no answer for him in the 4th quarter.
Winston has led the GMEN to victories this season and he also does a fine job of motivating the team. I’d love to see him return next season. If McCarthy shines for the rest of the season, the Giants need to decide if they should roll with him over Jaxson Dart.
It’s a tad head-scratching that J.J. couldn’t look like Tom Brady when he was on the Vikings with Justin Jefferson. It goes to show the improvement that a young QB can make. Tyler Shough is 27 and he’s in his second season. McCarthy is 23 and he’s in his third season. To put it simply, McCarthy has a very large ceiling.
