Will Jameis Winston shine in New York?
By: Jake Rajala
Jameis Winston is one of the most popular personalities in sports, similar to Ryan Fitzpatrick. Winston has been on a few different teams in his career, such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, and Cleveland Browns. He recently joined his fourth team: the New York Giants. With that said, a fascinating question looms over him: what does Jameis Winston bring to the Giants?
Winston hasn’t exactly been a gifted passer. Sure, he led the league in passing yards in 2019. However, he also led the league in interceptions (30 ints) in the same season! His career record is also 36-51 – which isn’t daunting.
I still believe he could turn it around. In 2021, he had a 5-2 start. He had 14 passing TDs to three ints. He was dazzling and he looked like a first overall pick.
The Giants have some prolific weapons for Winston to succeed. Malik Nabers is arguably better than any WR that Winston had in CLE. Wan’Dale Robinson, who was a second round pick in 2022, had a modest 699 receiving yards last season.
Brian Daboll knew which buttons to press with Josh Allen, who has impressive arm strength. Winston is somewhat of a poor man’s version of Allen, but Winston can succeed in similar plays via his arm strength.
Winston isn’t that hold in QB years. He’s 31, so he has some time to find the right fit. Geno Smith came back from the dead beyond the age of 31. Perhaps it’s time to start spreading the news that Jameis looks like he has the keys to the Giants offense and will look to prove he can succeed without leading the league in interceptions.
