Will a Derek Carr trade unfold?
By: Jake Rajala
Derek Carr has been a middle-of-the pack quarterback over the past decade. He is currently a QB for the Saints that has had a record of 14-13 over the past two seasons. He has failed to lead them to the post-season. With that said, there has been some speculation NO ships out Carr. Hence, I’m going to untwine the pros and cons of a Carr trade.
Pros
- Spencer Rattler
A great way to discover if Spencer Rattler is ready to start at QB is to throw him in the fire. He had impressive moments last season for a rookie QB – including an impressive touchdown drive against the Washington Commanders. He shouldn’t be judged to harshly for failing to win in his rookie season. After all, Peyton Manning was dreadful as a rook (28 interceptions) and Patrick Mahomes sat for his rookie season.
- Roster holes
The Saints will soon have a few key holes on their roster, most notably on their defense. Cameron Jordan, Demario Davis, and Tyrann Mathieu will most likely retire after this upcoming season. The Saints could use draft picks in exchange for Carr to build up their defense.
Cons
- Short term success
It will take time for a QB like Rattler or a rookie to play like an annual Pro Bowler. Carr will likely lead to more success in 2025. Kellen Moore wanted Carr on the roster, as he was a big reason he took the HC gig.
- Salary Cap
The Saints restructured Carr’s deal – which opened up around $30 million in cap space. At this point, it wouldn’t do a lot of help to the salary cap if they ship out Carr. He isn’t being overpaid right now.
I would like to see Carr stay for one more season. They have the pieces in place on defense to win right now. It will also help Rattler to have another season of learning before becoming a potential Week 1 starter. Carr is also a better option than Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers in my opinion. Even if the Saints stick with Carr, he may retire in a few more seasons, so they may need to persuade Rattler to being the QB2 for a few more seasons.
