Reflecting on the Wilson signing
By: Jake Rajala
Russell Wilson has bounced around these past couple of seasons. However, he has shown to be somewhat productive and he’s still not overly old in quarterback years. I believe he can play until 40 with his accuracy and arm strength. Of course, Wilson has just officially signed with the New York Giants.
The GMEN inked Wilson on a deal that’s worth up to 21 million dollars, with a 10 million dollar contract guaranteed for one season. I believe it is an excellent value signing for the Giants. Here’s how Daniel Jones and Wilson compared last season.D
Jones (10 games)
- 8 passing touchdowns
- 7 interceptions
- 2,070 passing yards
- QBR of 47.8
Wilson (11 games)
- 16 passing touchdowns
- 5 interceptions
- 2,482 passing yards
- QBR of 51.3
With that said, It’s clear that Wilson has proven to be a more productive QB than Jones. Wilson punched a ticket to the Pro Bowl last season. To be fair, Wilson has had a slightly better situation than Jones. Nonetheless, Wilson has a longer history of success.
I love the signing of Wilson. They get him on a cheaper deal than most QBs and he’s arguably more efficient than faces like Kirk Cousins, Derek Carr, and even Aaron Rodgers!
With that said, I clearly don’t believe he’s the long-term answer at QB for the Giants. He is 36 years old, so he will likely retire after a few seasons. It’s especially hard for dual-threat QBs to shine in the late 30s!
I would give this signing a B+.
I don’t believe they should have been this patient to acquire a signal-caller. However, he is the best option right now in my opinion. I’d still like to see the Giants draft a QB third overall. We’ve witnessed young QBs like CJ Stroud shine with a poor supporting cast. Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders can put up fireworks with Malik Nabers and hang 40 points up on NFC East foes. The Steelers were clearly not afraid to bring in Justin Fields to compete with Wilson. Hence, the Giants should take note of that and bring in a gifted 22-year old QB.
