Backup QB Options for Detroit
By: Jake Rajala
The Detroit Lions have one of the most underrated signal-callers in the league in Jared Goff. Well, it’s a dim situation at QB2 for Detroit. That was the reason why they brought in Teddy Bridgewater off the couch. With that said, their backup situation hasn’t improved this off-season. Hence, I’m going to untwine backup QB options for the Lions.
Teddy Bridgewater
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”
Teddy B has proven to be one of the best back-up QBs over the past five seasons. He went 5-0 with the New Orleans Saints, who had quite a fine situation. He is still 32, which is younger than a lot of free agent QBs.
Carson Wentz
I believe that Carson Wentz could have a resurrection similar to Geno Smith. Wentz has gifted traits and he has shined with poor pass protection even. He has the arm strength to utilize Jameson Williams and Amon St. Brown deep down the field. Wentz is also 32 years old.
Davis Mills
It wasn’t long ago that Davis Mills was projected to be the franchise QB long term for the Houston Texans. He threw for 16 passing TDs to 10 interceptions in 11 games as a rookie. Mills has potential to be one of the best QB2s in the league. He may prefer to play for the Super Bowl contender in the Lions than the Texans.
Josh Johnson
Josh Johnson still has dual threat magic in him. Johnson was a QB2 for Baltimore Ravens. It’s time for him to be a QB2 for another elite team in another conference. Johnson could have a similar role as Taysom Hill. Johnson is 35 years old, however.
Mac Jones
Mac Jones has proven to be a quality QB, given the right situation. After all, he did make a Pro Bowl! Mac could even push Goff for the starting spot in due time. Jones could be the QB2 for Detroit for a long time.
Honorable Mention:
Taylor Heinicke
It wasn’t a life time ago that Taylor Heinicke nearly beat Tom Brady in the playoffs. Heinicke went 5-3-1 in 2022. He has quality mobility and can make beautiful throws on the run.
