Za’Darius Smith best spots
By: Jake Rajala
There are still quality contributors in the free agency pool. In particular, there is a quality pass rusher by the name of Za’Darius Smith, who is available. With that said, I’m simply going to untwine the best landing spots for him.
Detroit Lions
Not only does NFL.com peg the Lions as the top destination for Smith, but so does many other outlets. It makes too much sense for him to land in Motor City. Aidan Hutchinson needs a sidekick. Marcus Davenport can’t stay healthy, to say the least. This can be the spark on defense that the Lions need to get over the hump.
Cincinnati Bengals
Cincy blatantly has a putrid defense. The Bengals ranked 25th in PPG allowed last season. They also came in at 24th in sacks, despite Trey Hendrickson unleashing a league leading 17.5 sacks last season. The key to beating the Kansas City Chiefs is getting after the QB without blitzing. With Smith and Hendrickson, they can constantly harass Mahomes.
There is also a chance that the Bengals lose Hendrickson. They would really need Smith then!
New Orleans Saints
I don’t love the Saints defensive end rotation. Cam Jordan recorded 4 sacks, Carl Granderson recorded 5.5 sacks, and Chase Young brought home 5.5 sacks. Smith could arguably be their top edge rusher. Plus, Cam Jordan will most likely retire after this upcoming season, so it would be nice to get Smith familiar with their defense, so he can play 2-3 more seasons with the Saints.
New England Patriots
It may be time for Smith to go home. The Patriots need Smith, as they ranked 32nd in sacks last season! Harold Landry was a fine addition as he recorded nine sacks! However, they are still aching for more help. Anfernee Jennings only managed to get 2.5 sacks. He’s also 27, so it’s less likely he will turn into a Pro Bowler tomorrow.
The Pats are also first in cap space, so they could give Smith the best deal.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Just as T.J. Watt is versatile and able to rush the pass and drop into zone coverage, Smith can hurry the passer and drop into zone coverage on occasion. The Steelers can’t lean on Watt to carry them to the Super Bowl. They need to maximize his prime by bringing in more talented faces. The Steelers are also sixth in cap space.
