Biggest obstacles for the Bills
By: Jake Rajala
It won’t be easy for Josh Allen to win MVP again and it won’t even be easy for the Buffalo Bills to return to the AFC Championship. With that said, I’m going to untwine the three biggest obstacles for the Bills to return to stardom.
- WR room
Let’s address the elephant in the room. The Bills WR group is brutal. I don’t love the philosophy that some teams have won the Super Bowl with pedestrian WRs, so that means a team shouldn’t add WRs. The example here was that the Pats had little talent at WR and they won the Super Bowl. I believe that’s a little silly. For 1. they have Tom Brady, also known as the greatest QB of all time. For 2. They often had Gronk, who was a prime receiving threat from “TE”.
- OLB
The Bills simply need help at outside linebacker. Matt Milano has only played in nine games in the past two seasons combined! He is also 30 years old, so these injuries will wear him down. Dorian Williams is a below average OLB. He registered a grade of 61.6. I’d prefer to see one, consistent OLB to play alongside Terrel Bernard. The Bills need to take a recipe from the Eagles, by adding a young, unproven LB and developing him. Of course, they did this with All-Pro Zack Baun.
- OT tandem
The Bills don’t have a sexy pair of tackles, to say the least. Their LT Dion Dawkins had a PFF score of 72.9 – which was 33rd among tackles. Their RT Spencer Brown had a PFF grade of 73.6 – which was 32nd among tackles. T.J. Watt and Chris Jones (who comes off the edge on occasion) will unleash hell against the Bills OT tandem. They allowed the fewest amount of sacks last season, but teams will adjust to attacking their edges.
The Bills need to get back to the big dance. They also need more explosion on offense, which usually comes from the WR spot. I’d still like to see the Bills pass protection play a little better in the playoffs, as they allowed two sacks and many hurries in each of their last post-season match-ups. The Bills can’t compete with the Baltimore Ravens as the “second best AFC team”. They need to make a risk and sign a couple of high-end free agents or swing big in the draft.
