Is Loomis overrated?

Mickey Loomis, also known as a Christopher Nolan look-alike, is entering his 24th season with the Saints! Loomis has been around since Hurricane Katrina and the post-days of Drew Brees. He’s seen it all. With that said, a fascinating question surrounds him: has he overstayed his visit in New Orleans? After all, NFL stands for “Not For Long”.
Loomis has had some of the best draft classes in Saints history. His best class was undoubtedly his 2017 draft. This one included Marshon Lattimore, Trey Hendrickson, Ryan Ramczyk, Marcus Williams, Alvin Kamara, and Alex Anzalone.
Sure, Loomis had a home run with a couple of draft classes. Does that give him a pass for allowing figures like Chauncey Gardner Johnson, Zack Baun, and Hendrickson to leave the building? No. Not only did I list very productive players, but they all have a few seasons of dominance left in them.
Loomis does deserve a lot of props for signing and adding players with little cap space. Every Saints fan wants Loomis to do their taxes and shopping.
The Saints have also failed to replace none other than Drew Brees. Spencer Rattler went 0-9 last season. He showed some potential, but he will need to make a big jump this off-season. I hope he trains as much as he golfs. Of course, the Saints drafted Tyler Shough in the second round in the past draft.
I really believe the fate of Loomis lies on how the QB plays. If he struggles, then Loomis may be shown the door. The Saints will likely lose Cam Jordan, Demario Davis, and Tyrann Mathieu after next season. Hence, it may be a nice time to rebuild at the GM spot, too.
If Loomis left, he may find a job with the Denver Broncos, alongside Sean Payton. Loomis just needs to promise that he won’t take the Saints favorite Taysom Hill with him.
Loomis isn’t that overrated. He doesn’t deserve a lot of blame for Derek Carr suffering an injury and missing seven games last season. Plus, the Saints have had a 14-13 record with Carr over the past two seasons.
If you can’t get an early first-round pick, it can be hard to find the right QB. Serious scouting or a trade seem plausible to replace a long-time franchise QB.
